My Dumbest Marketing Blunder And How You Can Avoid It

When I started submitting Ezine articles, I never realized their true power. I was just happy to see the articles being published.

I expected to get some traffic and hopefully some sales. I would have laughed if you told me those early words would still be floating around the web over five years later.

Well, smack me on the wrist and call me shorty, they are. You would think that's a good thing and it is except... That's the operative word, "except." The little critters are still multiplying around the web like rabbits in heat, but there is a little problem. Actually, the problem isn't so little.

This darn problem haunts me. At least a couple of times a week it drives me insane. Whenever I run across it I feel like the dullest axe in the shed.

If I were double jointed, I'd kick myself in the "hello there."

So what is this dumb mistake that:

  • Has me pulling my hair out by the roots

  • Has me kicking myself over and over

  • Haunts me like that house in Amityville

Outdated resource boxes with links leading to that dreaded 404 error.

I'm afraid to guess how much money and traffic I'm losing. It's a nightmare. Those babies are doing their part, but crazy John has made the ultimate dumb mistake.

How did this happen? How could I end up looking like the "village idiot?"

The only answer I can give is, "I didn't realize."

I never realized how viral articles were. I had no idea that little articles could circle the globe for years.

I didn't see the big picture. I wrote those resource boxes with no regard for the future.

How can you avoid making the same mistake?

1. If you're going to promote an affiliate program, don't link directly.

Sometimes programs just disappear. Other times, you may find the program hasn't lived up to your expectations.

Set up a redirect page on your website. If the program disappears, or you no longer wish to promote it, you can reset the page to lead wherever you choose.

2. Don't lead directly to your opt in list.

You never know when a list may change their pricing or services. For one reason or another you may change listservs.

A better option is to set up a page on your site to capture addresses. If you leave your present service, you can edit the page to lead to your new list.

If I had set up my links according to option number one for affiliate programs, or two for list building, I'd have kept the leads flowing and the orders coming for years.

Creating killer articles can drive traffic and pull in profits for years. So avoid the mistakes of this "dumb monkey" and reap the full rewards of your efforts.

The way I do it is with article marketing combined with list building. Now, the beautiful thing about article marketing, is that I don't have to go where they hang out. All I have to do is write articles that make sense to them. Example: I plan to make my weight loss product the number one name when it comes to weight loss products and programs, and I want to do this within 3 years earning 15 million dollars in total sales.

Taking this very simple example let's now break this down into weeks and even days. For the sake of simplicity I'll just take the monetary value as my end goal, leaving out my goal to become number one.

In three years I want to make $15 million dollars.

Dividing that by 3 means every year I need to make $5 million

Breaking this goal further into months, will mean that each month I need to make approximately $416,667

Breaking this further into weeks will mean I need to make approximately $7,986 each week.

Breaking this further down to days will mean that I need to make approximately $1,141 each day

Now compare $1,141 to $15,000,000, doesn't $1,141 seem an easier target to reach?

4: Look at your target each day and write down what you need to do to achieve this daily goal.

Now that you have broken your long term goal into smaller bits, it will be easier to identify you internet marketing strategies and to take these shorter steps, measuring everything as you go along, thereby creating a trend for your business.

Breaking your goals down further into days and even hours, will also allow you to monitor activities closely as a result you can react quickly to market changes when it is required. Your marketing strategies will always be evolving as you put them into practice and you will becoem an expert in your field.

SO WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO REACH YOUR GOAL?

Here are some questions that come to mind:

- How many sales do you need to make in order to reach this figure?
- How many people do you need to reach weekly/daily in order to achieve this goal?

Pace Your Posting or Dumping Your Content by the Truck Load?

Many online article marketers wonder if it makes sense to dump all your articles into an online article submission site in a certain category all at once or space out the postings a few at a time. The reason article authors wonder about this is because often Ezine Editors and other folks will look at the content coming thru the email alerts of newly posted articles.

AdWords is a tricky tool to use; on one hand it can make you a lot of money. Of course on the other hand, you can blow your entire life savings if you have no clue what you're doing. Marketing with AdWords is all about staying relevant; If you're too broad or off topic, you'll can't slammed or should I say slapped.

The first set of strategies you need to consider is to make your ads as closely related as possible. Make sure your keywords are in your ad title and in the body of your ad as well. Make separate campaigns for keywords that will need a separate ad; you may need to make many campaigns for the same product.

Next, you need to make sure that all of the keywords you're picking are closely related to your landing page. If you are an Internet Marketer trying to use a squeeze page to capture visitors email addresses, make sure that your squeeze page is optimized to your keywords. If one of your keywords is stock market strategies, make sure that the word is somewhere on your squeeze page or has a phrase closely related to the keyword. You may need to make multiple landing pages for each ad group or campaign.

Another marketing tip would be to optimize your display URL to also read one of your keywords if possible. Internet Marketing Strategies For New Owners

Once your site is in place you are faced with several challenges that are going to affect not only how long your business lasts, but also how effectively you will be able to promote and market your product or service to a broad, narrow or specific audience.

The web today is a lot like popular competitions. The owners love their widgets, they dress them up, enhance their skill for the talent competition and travel all over to make sure that their widget is in the running for a really big prize. The key in this phase, probably the phase you are now in, is that it begins with tremendous passion for your product or service. You know what you are selling intimately. You either have been doing it for someone else for years, been working on the idea of starting something that will allow you to make your own hours, or want to share something great. But, what happens when your passion is actually out there and you haven't got a resource bank to put power it.

Think of a sail boat. They are so beautiful. You always see pictures of these beautiful boats and smiling people with a happy guy at the helm. If you love the sun, water, adventure, this is a wonderful picture and makes you really want to be there. But, what happens when there's no wind? Unless sitting in the middle of the ocean sharing the last can of beans is your plan (which we know isn't), you're going to need some gas in your engine to cruise into a port until the wind comes up. So let's talk about the first two steps in making sure you always have some gas.

Product and Service Growth List

You already know that your website is more than loving your product or service and knowing that it will be beneficial to others, or posting some articles about your product on your website, using the marketing features once and then waiting for the multitudes to arrive. The web is a constantly evolving medium so marketing and maintenance must be a continual evolving effort for you to stay alive in this market. If your goal is to have a constant flow of traffic that includes both new and return customers then posting information or updates at unscheduled intervals or not maintaining your site is not going to result in a thriving business. Without a lot of time, effort and some excellent resources to bounce ideas around with, enhance your marketing strategy and provide you with honest feed back, you're going to be in a leaky boat really fast. So first, take a moment to make a growth list.

Your growth list is what you currently have in place-Website, basic marketing package, sort of a contact list and anything else that you know is going to need to be updated on a regular basis, the things that will never go away. Next, list the resources you currently have. This would include any packages or pieces of packages that you have only tried once or not used at all.

The next column of your growth list will be "need but don't have." These are those things (skills, products, software) that you don't have but need. Do you know every detail about your product or service but can't write or present it in a way that excites others? If you have a product, is it one that can be easily shared with others? Does your full-time job keep you from having the time to write articles, create ezines or newsletters, or cultivate and grow your market? In the web culture marketing is one of the biggest factors in growing your business effectively.

Once completed, keep your list in a safe place. Review your list often and add to it whenever you have an idea or see something that you might like to explore later. Don't delete anything. Your growth list is a keystone in creating and growing your marketing strategy.

Marketing Resource List

You want to create a list of the resources that you currently have on hand. This list includes people you know who will provide totally honest and unbiased opinions, mentors and tools that you have (even if you have never used them). Be sure to include contact or purchase information for your resources. As your business grows you will continue adding to this list. I have resource books that I morphed from address books purchased from my local market. This list will grow at an astonishing rate if you stick to your action plan.

Resources come in many forms. When I find an excellent book, article or piece of software or happen upon a great website I always put the title, author and other information in my resource book as well as the reason that I'm putting it there. This is especially important for the long term since you will forget in a year or two why you stuck a particular name, book or site on your list and if you haven't made a little note about it's purpose you may have to re-invent the wheel to get information that you already have.

Don't be afraid to contact authors or website owners when you want more information or have a question. Most of us love to write, chat and share information. The few out there who are just trying to solicit customers are pretty easy to spot and if you happen to wind up on an email list you really don't want to be on, you can always block it. For the most part though, when I contact someone with a question they are more than happy to answer the question. Usually I also get some great information that I didn't know I needed and in some cases I make a really good e-friend. Again, be sure to put these in your resource book as well as why you contacted them and what you learned. (You've probably figured out that I have several resource books).

There are many steps to take in growing your new business but the two items discussed above are by far the most important to ensure that you have a successful and growing internet business.

Article Marketing-Why Is Article Marketing So Important In My Internet Business?

Article marketing is the number one thing I do online. Why? Why do I spend time writing articles when there are so many other good ways to make money online?

I actually stumbled into article marketing to make money online. I started with a small website, and to get search engine traffic, I did two things: 1) I submitted to web directories and 2) I wrote articles, included my links, and submitted them to various article directories online.

What happened? The first thing that happened is that I gained top ten search engine rankings for several different keywords and then I continued to submit articles, but I began testing the article directories for best response. I found one that out paced all the others combined, and began to submit only to that article directory.

My traffic began to climb but what happened that was even more exciting was that the people who subscribed to my list via the article marketing each bought as much as 5 times as much as visitors derived from most other sources (outperforming PPC by about 10 times or more).

This of course surprised me, but when I began to think about it, I realized what had happened anyhow, this is my theory:

1) I write a lot of articles. So people have the opportunity to get to know me before the subscribe to my list they already have passed the relationship building step before they get to my list, so I can start selling my products right away, while they are still hot, interested in the types of products I offer.

Why Article Marketing Creates Such High Quality Traffic

As you might have guessed by now, article marketing is my favorite form of traffic.

By the way, what is article marketing traffic? Article marketing traffic is traffic that is created when I write articles about the topics that will interest people who would buy from me in the future, put links in my articles to web pages on my site (in my case, squeeze pages on my site), and submit those articles to the various online article directories.

So why does article marketing create such high quality traffic?

This is how article marketing works, on the visitor end: someone reads my article after searching for their desired subject online and my article has come up in the top ten results in the search engine. They read my article, and many of them click out of my article without reading any further or without clicking into my site.

That is the most important part! That is my screening process! I get rid of the deadbeats, the people who dont like me, who dont like my name or my ideas, or whatever. That means that only qualified people will get to my web site!

So this means that since only qualified people will get to my web site, then I have a list of people who are much more highly qualified than just about anybody else in my niche.

There is an incredible screening process that goes on with article marketing, that just doesnt happen with PPC or classified advertising, or banner advertising, or just about any other advertising online. It just doesnt happen with the other sources of traffic but it does happen with article marketing.
